I am starting my first lessons in photography and have been advised by my friend/teacher to go in for an entry-level camera - the NIKON D40X. I am now wondering what about Olympus or a Canon? Could someone please offer me practical advice? Perhaps a comparative analysis of Nikon and Olympus, for instance? Many thanks in advance.

  1. There's a past issue of Consumer Reports which rates the Olympus Evolt E-510 over the Nikon D40X because of the image stabilization [built into the body] and live action LCD viewer.  And of course, the 2 lense Olympus kit sells for $675 from samys.com.

    Good luck!

  2. Any entry level DSLR will serve you well. When it comes to quality, Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Leica, Fuji are all right there. The main advantage to a Canon or Nikon is that they are easier to find and get accessories for. I have an Olympus E-300 and E-510. Both are great, simple to use (Olympus is often cited for its ease of use), and a better value. In the same price range, Olympus offers more features. I really like the in body IS. It works with any lens I can put on the camera, even full manual lenses.

  3. my suggestion

    go to yahoo shopping

    digital cameras

    digital camera GUIDE

be sure to check titles on the left side

the guide should answer your questions

    or kenrockwell.com

  4. Both are good cheaper alternatives. Do side by side comparison on www.cnet.com and get prices, reviews and user comments too.

  5. I highly recommend Canon XTi(400D). It offers the same pro features that you would find in high end Canon/Nikon cameras. Most photographers will tell you that lenses are more important than Cameras. You can buy a Canon XTi with a kit lens for around $550 and save some money to buy extra lens or external flash. Most begginers spend most of their budget on the camera body and mount a cheap lens on their camera. Built in flash and kit lenses do not produce good results.

The Rebel XTi is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup so you can mount high end lenses like L series on XTi. You can also mount any Canon flashes such as the great 580ex II on XTi.

You can find plenty of great deals on ebay:

    Good luck!
