I travel about 5 miles to work each day and back by car. It is all road not too bad up hill or downhill. I am looking to buy a mountain bike of some sort for about £500 to use in place of taking the car, which would be your recommendation or what site would give the best advice?

  1. Look at a hybrid or fitness bike...they have bigger wheels and use narrower tires for a more efficient commute.  Look at the Trek 7000 or FX series to get started.....

  2. I'd second the above and add that mountain bike gearing is too low for road use especially if your in a flat area and the bikes are too heavy.

In addition to hybrids you could look at touring and trekking bikes.  There is some info on bike types here

If you are using the bike for commuting you will need a rear rack for luggage.  MTB's generally don't have the frame mounts to fit a rack.

Another question to ask is do you want drop handlebars or a straight bar.  I prefer drops so would choose something like this
