Question:

Which bike to purchase - the Trek 7300 or Trek 7.2FX?

I intend to bike for pleasure and exercise on the weekends, probably no more than 20 mile rides. I will stick to bike paths for the most part, but also may be doing some riding around in the city. Not taking cost into consideration (I know that 7300 is slightly more expensive), which would you recommend for a first bike purchase?

I was initially leaning toward the Trek 7300 since it is somewhat of a hybrid and I felt that I wasn't serious enough to buy a road bike....but, when I took test rides, I actually liked the feel of the 7.2 FX slightly more (perhaps it was because the seat on the 7300 was very uncomfortable).

Finally, I am a female, so please let me know if that makes a difference in the purchase.

Thanks so much!

  1. The fx bike, not having any front suspension (which can slow you down your average speed abit), might just suit you.

A saddle is easy to swap over,  bike fit is harder to change.

Without the front suspension, longer rides on smooth paths/roads, should be a bit faster.

20miles is quite a long way. A fx bike can be adapted for longer rides with the possibilty of adjusting the handle bar height, adding "thinner" tyres & adding some bar-ends for added comfort.

Both bikes, however,  are commuter friendly, with eyelits allowing front & rear racks and fenders.

Both bikes also have a somewhat relaxed geometry -  no need for bend  over too much & a sloping top bar (which can make it easier to straddle the bike - maybe that might make a difference for us females out there)

BTW - As well as being a female mysellf,  I own a 7100fx and love riding it - have used it for commuting, grocery shopping, 50+Km  Sunday rides & even a bit of supported touring. It's a versatile bike!
