  1. eyewitness travel guides-germany   its great i highly recomend

  2. 1. If you don't have one already buy a german dictionary.

    2. There's many little books that you can find at any bookstore, books like "All about Germans" and "German Do's and don'ts'". Little, paperback books that you can take with you are nice to have.

  3. It might be controversial but,Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler. Also biographies of Otto von Bismarck,Frederick the Great, and Martin Luther. These men are the greatest Germans who have ever lived and have had the most impact on German history.

  4. Getting literary here:

    Try the following:

Mark Twain's Guide to Heidelberg (contains many extracts from his works plus updated modern-day info related to things Twan describe over a century earlier)

Any Twain book including Germany (it's either "A Tramp Abroad" or "Innocents Abroad", or both)

Also, Twain's essay "The Awful German Language".

Another treat is Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men on a Bummel" and "Diary of a Pilgrimage"

See also "In a German Pension" by Katherine Mansfield.

You could also check how much of Bill Bryson's "Neither Here nor There" deals with Germany.
