I'm taking an AP English class at my high school this year. My summer assignment is the following:

a) Read one prose fiction [wtf does that mean??] novel by any American author past or present

b) Read a non-fiction treatment [??] focusing on a particular period or problem in American history

c) A collection of one American poet's works

Does anyone have any suggestions on which books i should choose? I would like my choices to impress my teacher. All help is appreciated. Thanks :)

  1. a) "Prose" meaning it's a fictional novel written in ordinary language.

    b) Non-fictional meaning it's true-to-life.

    c) The collection could be fact or fiction.

For me, I'd go for something historical.

  3. A) Choose :

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Catcher in the Rye by J..d Salinger

Any of these great books by great American authors would definitely impress your teacher.

  5. Prose fiction just means a fiction novel.  Your teacher obviously enjoys using a pronounced vocabulary.  There are tons of good fiction books, anything such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckelberry Finn, etc, etc.  Plenty of choices, depends on what kind of books keep you interested.

A non-fiction story about a problem or period is just as wide open.  For example, you could read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, which focuses on the Dustbowl in the Midwest and the Great Depression during the 1930s.  Excellent writing and a great read, a little longer than some other stories also but it goes by fast.

For your American poet, there are plenty to choose from.  Maybe Maya Angelou, if you've never read her works, would be a good choice.  She is very popular and a great writer and poet.

  6. a) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (if you haven't read it yet, you'll have to anyway)

    b) Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin

    c) Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
