Which boxes are better for subwoofers

I'd Go With Ported But To Get A Better Look @ Things Heres Some Pros & Cons Of Both Ported & Sealed Enclosures!!

Ported (Pros)

. Much Much Louder!!! (3-6db Increase)

. Increased Efficiency, Increased Low Frequency Output, Relatively Low Distortion!

CONS

. Bigger Enclosure Takes Up More Space In Trunk Or Wherever.Less Tolerant Of Design/Construction Errors, No Woofer Control Below Tuning Frequency.

Sealed (Pros)

Smaller Enclosure, Higher Power Handling, Excellent Dampening And Transient Response, Easy To Design And Build, Can Be Forgiving Of Design And Construction Errors.

it depends on the driver, some are only recomended for one or the other. there is no generic answer as much as we would all like there to be. in general ported is less accurate, but is more effecient. sealled is very accurate, but requires more power. but that is a generic statement there are many sealed systems that are louder than ported and vise versa. Also it is a sytem we are talking about. many SPL champions are sealed enclosures, in fact i believe the SPL world record holder is sealed. simply because of space restrictions. more sealed drivers are louder than less ported.

find a driver you like, then get a box custom made to the specs for that driver, that is always the best senario.

Sounds like ported would be best for you if the driver gives a choice, i would stay away from bandpass in general, they are tooo boomy. there are exceptions (sparky's).

Bandpass boxes: Maximum slam

Bandpass boxes are a special type of ported box designed for maximum slam. The woofer is mounted inside a dual-chambered box (one chamber sealed, the other ported), with the sound waves emerging from the ported side. The sound that comes out of the port is extra loud within a narrow frequency range.

Because bandpass boxes are super efficient within that range, they tend to boom. Their aggressive sound is great for rap, reggae, and hard rock. Not all subwoofers work well in bandpass boxes, though and they tend to sound muddy if not properly tuned.
