  1. Don't worry about the money. Don't join.

Like a previous poster said, your paycheck will come quicker at a fast-food restaurant, and you don't have to pledge your life.

  2. The bonuses you receive when enlisting depend on two factors: the branch you select and the job you end up taking. Bonuses are not offered by all branches nor are they offered for all jobs. Some of the more needed positions include security forces, battlefield medics, and doctors. In some cases you can receive increased rank, possibly officer commission, and up to $80,000 in bonuses, but this is if you have an M.D., experience, and are going officer generally speaking.

Other offers might be $10,000-20,000 for selecting military police, direct combat infantry, weapons specialists, etc. for the Army or Marines.

Next, the bonuses are paid either over your first year of service or over the entire term of service depending on your contract. This would mean that if you got $20,000 in bonus money, spread over a year, at two paychecks per month, you would make an additional $834 per check.

For any bonus, if you change jobs for whatever reason, or leave the service prematurely (discharge, injury, whatever) you loose any remaining bonus payments and most often have to pay back what they gave you already.

Your best bet is to schedule a recruiter meeting and ask them what bonuses are being offered currently and see what's available. Just remember to take what they save with a large grain of salt, and ask more questions of the processing personnel at MEPS if you make it there.

  3. Signing away your life is never smart in order to receive a stipend. You will be going to war and you will never be the same. Why don't you try school first, you can receive financial aid. Plus the military doesn't pay well at all. I assure you, a sign up bonus is nice, maybe a couple of thousand but you will be at or below poverty level as a soldier.

  4. Is that the only reason you'd consider joining? BC if so, I'd seriously rethink that. Some of my friends who Joined in 2004 have yet to receive their sign on bonus.. and plus.. you can't just get out if you want out.. and you have a lot of other things to think about as well..
