Which brand of yarn is better?

Hi! I've been knitting and crocheting for a little while now and have been looking to expand my yarn collection. I am using Bernat Softee Chunky yarn and absolutely love it, but there is not enough colors for my liking. I have heard pros and cons of other brands as well. The top three I have read alot on are: Bernat, Lionbrand, and Caron. So if anyone could offer me any advice on which they prefer and which would give me a better color scheme to use that would be great.

PS. I mainly knit and crochet hats and afghans, so a soft yarn would be preferable :) Thank you!

  1. I found "I love this yarn" brand and it is really soft.  It is the store brand yarn for Hobby Lobby or you can buy it on-line at http://www.craftsetc.com   The thing I like about this website is they have different stuff on sale all the time and if you buy $25 worth of stuff the shipping is free and very quick.

Another good choice for soft yarn is Caron Simply Soft.  It comes in lots of bright colors.

  2. there are many types of yarns and each have their own qualities.

I like Lionbrand Homespun, Red Heart Symphony, and Caron Simply Soft

but there are oodles- go to your local yarn store and investigate them

  3. Hi B,

I have found that I like Caron Simply Soft out of all the brands, and I do agree with one of the answerers about Red Heart.  It is scratchy.  Caron is easy on the fingers, smooth as you crochet.  There is more color options online, if you feel comfortable buying online.  I buy from Herrschners online.  They have tons of yarn and tons of colors.

I like buying yarn, too.  There is just so much you can make.

    Thanks,

  4. I bounce from one brand to another.  It depends on the project and price.  Lion Brand is a 130 year old company and most of their yarns are made in the USA.  I like Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice because of the color palate and soft quality--good all purpose worsted weight yarn.  Lion Brand's Homespun is a boucle type, great yarn for prayer shawls and afghans.  It is so soft.  Great to wrap up in.

  5. I have been crocheting & knitting since I was 16 yrs old, I'm 52 now. From the yarns you mentioned, I like Lionbrand the best. I have used all three. However I personally like Red heart yarn the best of all. The pros for it is it comes in loads of colors, its very durable, & it comes in a "no dye lot" line! Which means the colors are easily matched. The only con I can think of is sometimes you will find yarn that has ties in it. Hope thid helps ya!

  6. Hi, I am using DMC cotton. Is not a bad yarn and is very good quality. I dont know where you live but it will be good if you can buy it.

  7. I love the Bernat Alpaca yarn and their other natural blends, they're a little pricey but not too expensive.  I use them for wristies, everybody loves them (I sell them).  Also the Bernat Satin is cheap but really soft and works well for just about anything, it comes in a wide variety of colors too.

For baby stuff I use Bernat Baby yarns, different kinds for different projects.

I'm not a fan of Red Heart Super Saver, I find it's cheap and scratchy, I can't do anything with it, I wouldn't even make a blanket for a dog with that stuff.  But the Red Heart Soft Touch is nice.

I actually use A LOT of Bernat yarns, it's easy to find in my town and the quality hasn't let me down.  You get what you pay for though.

I don't buy a lot of Lion Brand yarn, even though I like it a lot.  I have to drive 30 minutes to the nearest store that carries it.  Same with Caron, I do have some that people have given me, it's ok, but I don't seek it out.

  8. I like most kinds.  Red Heart, I think, has a better selection of colors to choose from, but it can be scratchy.  For softness, I like Caron.

  9. I like them all. Lion brand has a large choice I think. You can buy yarn from their company web site if there's something in particular you want.

Also here's another link for another store.

    http://www.yarnsupply.com/

    They don't have Caron there.

    http://www.bernat.com/product.php

    http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/pg.fcgi

    http://www.caron.com/

Have fun. Buying online you have access to all colors they make.

  10. um the kind u buy at the store
