I am getting a cage for my 4 female rats and I am just having a heck a time deciding. They were born June 13th so I don't know if that gives you a size idea but which would be best.

1. The Martins Cage- R-690 (don't remember what it is called). it is 24 X 14 X 36 though.

2.http://www.ferretdepot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=fd&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=60248&Category_Code=3SuperPetHomes&DEN_CRVM_Offset=10#DEN_CRVM

Is the spacing to far apart?

Once again, spacing? And there are a lot of neg. reviews about it-anyone have a pos. experience?

Suggest another if you like but price wise it needs to be under $120

  1. all those cages are suitable i guess lol u sound like a worried parent ;) i noe that u are just caring about ur new babies =]]] i suggest the number 4 or 3

  2. I have the number two/three cage that was meant for a ferret. I got mine from Petco when going out of biz and did use for a ferret briefly. Then the ferret went away and I put my two male rats in it. They LOVE it.  They are 2.5 yrs old now and been in that cage about 6mos. It is pretty easy to just take the whole top metal off the plastic and lift.. dump the plastic part out, wash the shelves and good to go.  The spacing isn't bad and I think will be  fine for the lil ones. If not use cardboard in/out the wires along sides..or use aquarium for time being. But us should know those are bad for resperatory/lungs.

email me if u want to see a pic/tomorrow of my watson and willard in that cage: missingkyla@gmail.com

  3. I have that exact martin's cage for some of my girls.  Four can live in it comfortably, just make sure you put in hammocks and boxes and stuff for them to explore and nest in.  A lot of times ferret cages have wired that are a little too far apart.  I like the martin's cages because they are very airy and are easy to clean!

  4. The Rat Tower (the Martin's cage you mentioned) will be too small for 4 rats once they are fully grown.  I use that one for just my two girl rats.  I would suggest getting one of the larger ones from Martin's, get it powder coated and a lid.  It will be less smelly and easier to clean.  The Rat Skyscraper would probably be best for four female rats.  The Ruud is freaking huge!

The Ferret Depot cages might be okay, but the spacing might be too large for baby rats.  The spacing would be fine once they are older, but I would be hesitant about getting it for baby rats.  Those buggers can squeeze out of anything.

Check out this cage calculator to determine if the cage will be large enough for four. http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.sht...

According the rat calculator, the Petco cage will also be too small for 4 grown female rats.  It actually barely fits 3 comfortably.

If you get a wire cage (and you should for air circulation), make sure you go out to your local hardware store and buy some cheap linoleum tile to slap on all the wire floors.  It will be easier to wipe up messes and won't hurt your rats' feet like wire will.

I know you have a budget for your cage, but keep in mind that a quality cage is necessary for the well being of your rats.  Since you decided to get four rats, it's important to provide them with the necessary home.  If you can't afford the cage, how are you going to afford potential vet care, and other incidental costs?  I recently had a small tumor removed from my rat and it cost $200+!

    Hope that helps!
