  1. Comprendre is french,it  is the verb "to understand"

  2. Well, it seems to me the word Comprehend probably came into the English language through the Norman Invasion, basically a bunch of French speaking people invaded England and French became the language of the ruling class which trickled down to the common folk. Notice how a lot of our simpler words sound German, and the more formal words sound French or of Latin origins? for example "to understand" in English, would be "verstehen" in German, and "comprendre" in French!
