Hollywood and media got their concept of UFO from that old paintings I guess.

There have been experiences/sightings of aliens since people began doing cave and rock drawings.

The first modern UFO sighting was made by a pilot flying over the Cascade mountains back in 1947 or so.  What Kenneth Arnold described was a formation of flying cresent-shaped, or flying-wing type objects.  He described their motion as "like a saucer skipping on water"

His descripton was misquoted in the press, and sudenly everybody started seeing flying hubcaps and pie plates and such.

The first "close encounter" sighting was reported by Betty and Barney Hill in the early sixties.  They reported an abduction experience, including the big-eyed aliens, missing time, automobile malfuntion, and medical/ reproductive experimentation elements.

After the book and TV movie describing their experience came out, suddenly hundreds or thousands of other people began describing similar episodes, with variations, but encompassing all the same themes.

Hollywood didn't get eally interested in UFO's until the 1950's.  Even then most of the movies were reactons to the Cold War and served to reassure frightened citizens that a nuclear war would never be "permitted" by a higher force.

UFO's have been "sighted" many years prior to the formation of Hollywood.

UFOs have always been reported though out the ages. There have been cave drawings, hieroglyphs(from what Ive seen), paintings, and just historical accounts. In the 1800s there was a big mass-ufo sighting know as the mysterious airship this was pretty decently documented case. One of the oldest known photos was in the late 1890s(which was of the airship). So to answer your question yes they have been!
