I love this question. The egg came first. Here's why...

A zillion years ago there was a creature very similar to a hen...a creature who evolved from something else and was ALMOST like the hens we know today....that hen laid an egg which was the very tiny bridge to the next tiny stage in evolution, and that egg was hatched into the very first hen.

Of course, another reason why the egg came first is because the question was "egg or hen?" and not "hen egg or hen".......dinosaurs laid eggs, which were all before any type of hen.

This is evolution at work- there were chicken-like creatures and slowly the genes changed because it was survival of the fittest, and that was the form that worked best. So hen-like first, and eggs that started to carry the changed or mutated gene(s).
