I think you are talking about the story "the lady and the tiger". As it is the story of semi-barbaric era I think that the princess would have directed him to tiger. She would have felt that if he cant be mine then I would not let anybody else have him.

I think that the princess, after indicating which door he should choose, should have rushed down and hid behind the door instead of the lady, and then the king would have had no choice but allow them to marry.
