If you had the choice between a new Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens for retail price (about $500) or a used Nikon D1x (body only) for $500, which one would you choose? Why?

Thank you!

  1. I'd go with the D40. Buying used cameras is closer to a coin toss than an informed purchase when it comes to DSLRs or cameras in general.  If you don't mind wear on the body of the camera, good.  If not, buying used isn't a deal.

The next problem is internal wear in the camera.  It's very hard to tell if there's something broken or worn out inside the camera, especially mechanical parts like the shutter.

If the former owner of the lenses changed lenses a lot, then another risk is dust on the sensor.  I don't think the D1x has a dust removal/reduction system so your pictures would end up with unwanted specs.

If you already have lenses with the Nikon D1x that helps but if you don't expect to shell out at least $100 for a non VR (vibration reduction) 18-55mm ED II AF-S DX nikkor lenses (I think that's around the price).

The D40 is an excellent camera (don't fret about the 6MP sensor being too small because it is more sensitive to light and faster than the very similar D40x 10MP sensor).  If you want to find out more (very good) information on the D40 I suggest going to www.kenrockwell.com
