  1. In the point and shoot arena, Olympus suffers because it uses a nearly proprietary memory card ... the xD.  Nikon, Canon and Panasonic use the nearly industry standard SD and SDHC memory cards.

On the DSLR arena, Nikon and Canon are the only two companies that make professional level DSLR's, Panasonic and Olympus use the 4/3rds sensor which are one half the size of a full frame sensor.

All four produce some of the worlds best optics.

  2. Read this article by Ken Rockwell. Your answer is there.

  3. Canon..They are stronger

  4. In the DSLR field you only really have Nikon or Canon to choose from. To say one is better than the other is very difficult. Canon probably has a better variety of lenses. Technology changes so quickly that today Nikon may have a slight advantage over Canon and tomorrow Canon will come out with something slightly better than Nikon. It is very much a matter of what feels comfortable to you. I have been a Nikon shooter forever. I don't feel comfortable with a Canon in my hands. You will have to pick one and stick with it. Good lenses are quite expensive, and to change from one manufacturer to the other after you have spent several thousand dollars on other gear, it would have to a pretty dramatic improvement to cause a change. I buy only Nikon lenses. The less expensive third party stuff looks attractive, but I have yet to find comparable quality to true Nikon glass.
