  1. Point and shoot cameras are slow when trying to capture the action and what ever the lens is that's it, you can't change it.

The D 40 enables you to add lens and flash units giving you more ability to shoot sporting events or other activity. A 70-210 2.8 lens on a D40 will record  the action 100% better than any point and shoot camera will. I recommend the D40 because I have one and it works well.

  2. I have the Nikon d40 and it's very good! It's kind of complicated, but if you want to take amazing pictures I would suggest this camera. It's very popular. The only annoying thing about this camera and all slr cameras, is the size. It's really big and annoying to carry it everywhere! It's also more expensive than the Coolpix.

  3. If you are focusing on sports, then you absolutely must have three capabilities:

    - fast shutter speed

    - a fast lens

    - tracking autofocus

You will not get that combination with a P&S camera - at least not easily. I would definitely recommend the D40. Statutory warning: the kit lens that comes with the D40 is not fast, and also does not zoom out much. So you will likely need to add a fast telephoto or zoom lens to your arsenal. By the time you add it all up, the package is not so cheap.

BTW, I have a D40, and it is capable of taking terrific pictures all around.

  4. All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.

The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.

Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.

I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.

    Good Luck
