Which camera is better: ?

Canon EOS 12.2 MP Rebel XSi

or

Nikon D60 10.2 MP

I am interested in the 'live view' option that the Canon offers; however, I am a beginner and I'm not sure if this option is necessary. Any opinions/suggestions would be appreciated!

  1. Canon has a wider variety of lenses

    Nikon has quality

    I only have Nikon

I would not recomend the D60 instead go for the D90(has live View).

Its new and has alot more features and will help in the future since it has a built-in focus motor( most lenses don't have built-in motors)

  2. Nikon of course :)

Seriously....  you need to play with them and go for your personal feel.. they are both excellent

  3. Having used digital cameras with a live view and without I strongly prefer live view. I think this would be helpful for beginners learning to frame and image and it lets you sit back from the camera and see what you are going to get which better represents a final image in that you are going to hold a photo at a distace away from you so you might benefit from holding that camera at that distance as well. It might help you better visualize the final result.

See if you can borrow (even for 5 minutes) your friends' cameras, some with live view, some without. See what you prefer.

  4. i have a canon and i love it! wouldnt trade it for another brand!

  5. In my opinion, the live view is not necessary on a DSLR.   The only time you are likely to use it is when you use a tripod.  It is extremely hard to hold a DSLR out in front of you to use the live view to take a picture.  The camera is too heavy to hold really steady.  Plus any serious photographer would laugh at you if you did that!   Holding it up to your face to use the viewfinder gives the camera more support, and holds it steadier.

As for which brand,  the Canon owners will tell you Canon, and the Nikon owners will tell you Nikon.   What you should do, is go to a good camera store and handle these two cameras.  Ask questions of the salesperson and take some pictures with it.  You will know the camera for you when you hold it in your hands and see how easy you can use the controls.
