The SD850IS has a photo quality below that of the NEW SD790IS unlike the other answers listed above me; and I know this because I actually own both cameras.

PROS OF THE SD790IS:

As I wrote above, the SD790IS is the newer of the two... and with the new cameras come different features:

- 10 megapixels over the 8.1 megapixels of the SD850IS

- 3" LCD versus the 2.5" of the SD850IS (except it doesn't have the optical viewfinder due to the large screen size).

- Sleek look if you're into that stuff

- Better ISO with low-light photographs

CONS OF THE SD790IS:

- Has a 3x optical zoom compared to the 4x of the SD850IS

- No optical viewfinder

- Cost as it is about $40 more, but you get what you pay for
