Question:

Which car is safer - Ford Explorer or Ford Edge?

I'm about to change car and Ford refuses to answer which car is the safest - Ford Explorer or Ford Edge.

As we know, Ford Explorer has a really lousy track record. Easily rolls over, poor performance if driven into from the back and quite a large car which makes the car more accident prone. What about the Edge - it weights less, but has better crash test results. Anyone have any interesting insights?

  1. The Ford Edge

  2. edge

  3. The Edge handles better than the truck-based Explorer while offering almost as much cargo space. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, it's easier to control than a truck-based SUV in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Also, getting in and out of both the front and back seats is easier. In fact, the back seats in the Edge are roomier than those in the Explorer, a benefit of its design.

  4. What difference does it make. A fully loaded semi hits you and it won't matter what you are in, you're gonna get hurt.

  5. You really have answered your own question - the Edge undoubtedly will resist rollovers better than an Explorer, and has better crash test results.

On top of that, it's superior handling and braking will help you to have a better chance of avoiding the accident to begin with.

If you're leaning towards Fords - consider the Taurus X (used to be Freestyle). It's also a crossover like the Edge (with the same engine and transmission), but has three row seating, it has more room than either of the others. Also great crash test results - for those that think Volvo's are the best, the 2008 Taurus and Taurus X (not older Tauruses) are based on the Volvo S80 structure.

    Good reviews too.

    Hope this helps!

  6. I had an Explorer and hated it, it broke down constantly.  My mom has and Edge and likes it. I have an Escape and love it.

  8. I'd say you should avoid ford if you wanna buy a safe car.try Volvo or Saab. But if you're in the states these may cost more than in Europe.
