1960 Pontiac was leading the pack with fast cars, everywhere. In Drag Racing Jim Wangers and Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick "Mr. Pontiac" were leading with their 389 Pontiacs factory. In 1961 Ford unleashed the 390 cid to battle with Pontiacs' 389, however Chevrolet brought out their 409 cid and Pontiac totally dominated by releasing their new "Race Engine", 421 Super Duty. However Lloyd and Carol Cox beat all with their 389 Super Duty factory, and Hayden Proffitt had no contest winning with his 421 Super Duty Pontiac factory with a 1/4 mile time of 12.55 seconds. As early as 1961 Pontiac made their own factory headers with outlets to bypass exhaust. You could run with exhaust on the street or run with out exhaust for Drag Racing. I remember 1991, my sisters' boyfriends younger brother Mike took a ride in one of my 1970 Pontiacs. A 1962 Chevy Impala SS 409 tried to pass me, good luck buddy. mike says what are you doing thats' a 409 he's going to smoke you.
