Which car would you choose to take around the UK coastline?

I'm planning a few weeks travelling around the UK coastline. I know parts of it are rugged and hilly and some areas are flat and pristine. Should I hire a 4WD Freelander or a normal car for this purpose?

  1. There will be very few places that will be really steep or muddy. Get something that will have a good fuel economy considering the current price of petrol, something that's comfortable to sit in. Anything with a 1.6 engine or above will be fine, a 4WD will be overkill.

  2. Are you going "over the sticks"  or "round by the road"

In the latter case, I'd trust my reliable old Ford Sierra, anyday!

Over the sticks would need a 4X4, and, the land owner's permission - if you can get it.

  3. You won't need a 4WD go for something that is light on fuel (with the price at the moment).

  4. The 2002 Morgan Plus 8

  5. yeh, just choose a normal car, you won't need 4 wheel drive. A diesel engine would be best, as it will be more efficent

if i could choose any car to do it in, i would go for an Aston Martin DB9 ... but that's just me dreaming :-)

  6. compromise - you may need 4x4 if your on beaches or whatever, however, you will not need an SUV. if you need space then i advise you to get a 4wd estate car - a Subaru legacy outback or Audi a6 all road or a Volvo xc70.

  7. For that kind of distance you'd be better of with a diesel. Go for something sporty with plenty of torque like a Vauxhall Astra hatchback, with a 2.5litre turbo engine  -that'll easily pull over a hill and get you about quite quickly, and with quite good fuel economy!

  8. you'll seldom actually need a 4x4 unless you're on farmlands, so no, you won't need one. get something faster and lighter on fuel.

  9. subaru convertible awd even works on the beaches !
