I am thinking of changing my career and starting an apprenticeship at 21 in one of the following?

:Painting and Decorating

:Floor and Wall Tiling

:Plastering

:Blockpaving

Which one would potentially earn you the most when sub-contracting your own business and working 5-6 days a week?

Also, is anyone aware of any benefits or government assistance i can get for beginning an apprenticeship at age 21?

  2. Painting and decorating is a fully skilled trade, compared to plastering or bricklaying which is semi-skilled; however, every dipstick thinks they can be a painter and you're forever working with those types and competing with them money wise.  Plastering is a dying/difficult trade because so much is prefabricated and cutting out the plasterer and along with tiling you can spend a lot of time between jobs.  Plumbing, electrician, carpenter much better.  Even roofers though they have problems with weather can earn really well when they do to compensate. Good luck.

  3. Not a clue about the gov benefits etc, but i have a strong feeling that you would earn most in the plastering trade if you were good at it.  Dont need much training to be a painter and decorator tho, perhaps you could do both in time? then someone could hire you to completely overhawl a whole room!

Anyway good luck on your future plans.
