I am trying to decide on a 2nd career choice. I currently have a job I really, really don't like and I don't want another job in hotel management. I plan on going to a tech school to get a certificate/degree and I need a little help deciding. My 1st choice would be a nurse BUT I have to work full time and no colleges in my area offer a part time degree program. Here they are:

Medical assistant, medical coding/transcription, health care management (2 yr degree).

Please tell me why and if this is your career why I should choose it. I would rather be happy than rich.

  1. Go get some career testing if you rather be happy than rich.

  2. If you want more hands on with patients, I think being a medical assistant is a good choice. Medical coding is a lot of computer work, sitting a lot of the day. Don't know much about health care management.

Best of luck in your career change.

  3. medical assistant is very rewarding and seems like a good choice for you, however, you can compare these jobs at PureMedicalJobs.com and make the decision eventually on your own as that is what matters

  4. All of the above are good choices, but it depends on whether you want to work directly with the patient, or with computers, numbers and data.

If it is the former, choose medical assistant.  If it is the latter, choose medical coding and transcription.  In either case, be sure you take a program that is accredited and one that will lead you to certifying in either field.

A more lucrative (and possibly interesting) choice would be to work with the equipment used in the medical field.  Check out radiology, endoscopy and ultrasound programs, or a program as a respiratory technician.  All of these programs involve direct work with patients, so make sure that is what you want.  A physical therapy assistant is also aa possibility.  The 2 yr health care management degree is a little more uncertain, because while it is valuable, it doesn't lead to any one position or certification in the medical field.

  5. Look into Pennfoster and/or Ashworth college. Both online schools. Yes you can get those degrees online except for the nurse degree. Or any online school for that matter. They all do offer that.

  6. Hmmmm well look into the health care management program better, because it should cover coding and transcription. You also should pick one that is accredited by AHIMA so you qualify for your RHIT. Many places require this in order to be a coder, and most require it for you to be a manager of medical records. Look at www.ahima.org to see if your community college is accredited.

If you want to be a nurse though, maybe you should go for medical assistant, since you want to work with patients.

I went to school to be a nurse for 1 semester, where I realized that I absolutely hated it and wanted to be more behind the scenes. I do coding and transcription, and love them both.
