I do oil changes and I'm worried that if I do them too fast on some types of cars people will get suspicious.

  1. so walk a round more look up look down drag your feet

  2. Rack it, do the LOF and drop it. Get paid, repeat. Do a good job and help to keep our industry honest.

  3. diesels take a bit, because of the amount of oil that they hold. ford holds 15 on the newer ones, dodge holds 12 qts, and chevrolets duramax holds 10qts. that much oil through a 14mm hole takes alittle bit to drain.

  4. if it's low to the ground you have to jack it up, where on a full size truck you don't have to just get under it change oil. when I change oil, it takes me about 15-20 min  thats with dumping the drain oil onto a jug to recycle. also I replace the filter everytime

  5. You should leave the old oil time to drain out.  When its just dripping slowly - how much old oil is left inside the engine?

A warm engine is going to drain faster than a cold engine.

Do right by your customers it pays in the long run.

  6. If you are required to do the job in an allotted amount of time I'll have to understand. Deep down inside I feel sorry for the end costumer. Dealerships let the car cool off in the parking lot before they take in in for the oil change service. I've timed their drain period and the motors are too cold and and the drain period way too short. There's no way on this green earth all the oil drains out in 3-5 minutes with a very luke warm motor. The same applies to your local "fast" oil change chain stops.

We're independents and have been doing oil change services for over 50 yrs. It's best if the coolant is at maximum temperature with the motor still running ramp it or lift it shut it off and drop the plug and oil filter. This is a must as most systems today have anti-drain back valves in the filters and all the oil has a better chance to drain properly. Do all the other checks being sure to allow a minimum or 20 minutes drain time.

When I'm on my time with my own cars trucks and other equipment I often allow the hot engine minus the filter to drain up to one hour.

  7. labor time collectively states 18 minuets on most light duty vehicles.

medium and heavy duty vehicle require more time due to the capacity and number of filters

  8. It is what it is. You remove the oil plug on the pan and when it is drained, it is time to remove the filter and replace it. Then you fill with oil and start the engine to circulate the new oil and shut down and recheck the level. Always has taken me approximately 10 minutes. If your getting paid flat rate it should never take much longer unless your changing oil on a diesel.

  9. Probably the ecotec motors or the big heavy duty trucks. The ecotec's have an internal oil filter, and the trucks are just a pain to rack safely. Usually it takes me about 20-30 minutes to change oil, perform a GM safety check, and fill out the paperwork. If I find something wrong on the vehicle it takes longer because I give the customer an estimate for the repairs needed.

  10. I wouldnt be. like org said: it is what it is. people who think that ( and there will be some) probably have taken their car to the dealer for such jobs and have never done this themselves. if they have, its is likely that they will know that it is fast. there are 10 minuete oil changes in almost any city

  11. So question is are you really changing there oil?

  12. mercedes.....you need to remove the bottom splash/engine pan...but.....always remember its not how fast you are.... its how good you are....this isn't a nascar pit stop ...a small mistake can ruin an engine ...and your day....you get no second chance if something goes wrong...i have been changing oil for 30 + years on all kinds of cars ...when i get in a big  hurry...its easy to overlook things....so be careful...
