Which charities/NGOs have the best reputation (actually helping, and keep the least money for themselves)?

I mean non-religious, international (not local or national) charitable organizations or NGOs.

  1. That's an impossible question to answer -- what I think are "the best" won't be what someone else thinks are "the best."

    And what do you mean "keep the least money for themselves"? You mean an organization that doesn't pay staff members and instead hands out cash money to people in need? Most nonprofit don't operate that way -- they provide services, not cash, and those services are provided by staff members, and those staff members are professionals with a great deal of training and need to be paid. The organization also has to pay for facilities, copy machines, computers, office equipment, phone and Internet access, etc. -- you want an organization that *doesn't* have those things? That would be a very poorly run nonprofit...

    Anyway, I give my donations to CARE International, as they are focused on women and children, and are focused on capacity-building -- helping women to have access to education and jobs so that they can take care of themselves and their families. I also give to Madre.org, which has a similar focus.
