As in, most of the money goes to its programs and services rather than just paying for its fundraising, promotion fees, or a highly paid CEO

  1. You can search on Charity Navigator or Guidestar for the percentages of income that charities use for program expenses, versus fundraising, or administrative fees.

  2. Demelza House Children's Hospice. They get no help from the government, and rely strictly on donations to stay afloat.

  3. There's no one answer to your question. If a nonprofit pays staff members, then is all that money going to program, if the nonprofit provides services to the community or clients through staff work? Or would you consider that not actually "giving to the cause"? If the nonprofit has to pay for ads in the local newspaper in order to reach the people it is trying to serve, would you consider that not actually "giving to the cause"?

If you are concerned about a particular charity, contact that organization and ask for a copy of its most recent annual report. But I suggest you volunteer for some nonprofits and see for yourself how they operate -- I think you will learn alot about just how expensive it is to deliver services.

  4. I honestly don't know. I prefer to help out local charities with gifts in kind and/or volunteer time. My preferred one always has listed online their critical needs, I try and donate some of those items etc. once a month.

I spent some time browsing charitynavigator awhile back, I am sure you can find what you seek there if you do a little digging.
