Which chord tones are ok to double in music theory?

I realize the root is always the best to double. But if you're forced to do otherwise, is it better to double the 3rd or 5th of a chord next? I realize that in a V chord, the third is the leading tone, meaning you should not double it, but what if it's not the leading tone, would you double the 5th or 3rd? Why?

  1. i double the five with a lower five, just cause it makes it sound heavier

  2. However they are called, concentrate on harmony in your chord notes. Doubling the thirds and fifths work well, but the root notes can always be doubled--even tripled--for good effect.

Think of the 12-string guitar and all the duplicate tones.

  3. The fourth and fifth of the key, not the chord, are the best for doubling, according to my theory book. That is, if the chord includes one of them.

  4. well my favorite chord, despite all the music theory i've taught and learned, is the so called power chord of a guitar.  It is a simple Root note, fifth, and octave.  fifths and octaves are the most powerful notes and they always fit together perfectly.  the third is also good, but it is not a perfect interval.
