Which cities are safe for an american to travel to in colombia? which cities are dangerous?

bogota is the safest there. if you go outside to rural areas there are drug trafficers all over columbia especially the middle section

so i would stay in the northenr part of columbia if i were you

Bogota is in the center of Colombia.  I would recommend visiting Bogota, Cartagena or Cali, but really as long as you are smart about traveling you are probably going to be fine no matter where you go.  My dad just got back from visiting family there and they all traveled by car from Bogota to Ibague and then up to the state of Boyacá.  The only place I would say to avoid is the far northern area of the country (the border with Panama, not the Coast), and the far south (the border with Ecuador).  

My family is from Colombia, but I have only traveled there 3 times.  Never been scared, never had a problem.  Have a GREAT trip.. I know you'll love it!  And check out the excellent link to a great site for people who live/travel to/love Colombia.

Well actually I am from Colombia. I was born and raised there up until I was 11 years old. So I would definately say that Cartagena is one of the safest cities in Colombia. It is a historic city. And a lot of tourist are drawn to that city because of the beautiful beaches, good foods, and friendly people. Yeah so Colombia is known for drugs but what country is flawless...I mean people seriously think that in every corner there is a drug dealer offering them drugs when that's not even the truth...plus the government is cleaning up the city more and making it even more beautiful...Bill Clinton has gone there and so has Bill Gates. Also in November is when they hold the Miss Colombia pagent and everybody goes to Cartagena, every year they hold the pagent at the convention center...but anyways you should definately include visiting  Cartagena in your trip:)
