There are other strong musician communities in other large cities.

Well, that certainly depends on the type of music you are considering....  if it's to study all facets of music, then New York City is one of the best places... especially for classic music training...this would be if you would be planning on a Music Conservatory type education....    If your music career leans more toward rock and roll, then New York or Los Angeles are both excellent.... And if you are leaning towards country/western music,  then Nashville, Tennessee or Branson, Missouri would be your best bet....

We'll if your startin out I'd suggest smaller cities where there is a bit less competion for gigs. There are lots of local music festivals and county fairs were you could book a few gigs, if you want to live in a city I'd suggest Austin, TX or Minneapolis, MN to start out. Both cities have a more much more reasonalbe cost of living compared to LA or NYC. And they are both known for thier local and thriving music sceens.
