Which cities in Mexico have the most Americans (tourists and residents)?

I want to study Spanish in a Mexican city so I think it best to AVOID choosing a school in cities where there are definitely too many American residents or American tourists or even too many American students all learning Spanish (but speaking English instead). Which city is my best bet to study Spanish in, considering just this criteria?

  1. There are many Spanish language schools in San Miguel de Allende but you will find a high percentage of people are native English speakers.  The best schools in cities with a small percentage of American residents are in Guanajuato or Cuernavaca.  There are many Americans residing in Guadalajara, but as a percentage of the total population there are not very many.  Just remember that Guadalajara has a large population and a huge traffic problem and the buses are not the best in Mexico.  I lived there for over 6 years.  You will find schools in smaller towns but they usually do not have a good reputation.  I also lived in Puebla and the school at UDLA is good but you will find many foreign students there who speak English.

The largest number of Americans is in Guadalajara but the highest concentration of Americans would be in Chapala, Ajijic and San Miguel de Allende.

  2. A good option to study is Queretaro, a nice city mid-sized with not many Americans. Weather is great and there are a some schools where you can study spanish.

  3. baja california mexico, it is full of gringos. about 35% fo population, that is hight porcentis

  4. The best Spanish is in Mexico City.

  5. I would recommend Oaxaca--it's such a charming city.  There are some retirees from Canada and the USA that you might see drinking their coffee in the restaurants around the main square.  But they are not overwhelming in numbers.

Cuernavaca would be my second choice.

I'd guess that the highest percentages of norteamericanos would be in:

    Ajijic

    Chapala

    Puerta Vallarta

    San MIquel de Allende

    Cancun

    Guadalajara

    Acapulco

    Mexico City

  6. Mexico city, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta. TOP tourist cities.

  7. One of the best Spanish courses in Mexico is offered by the Universidad de las Americas in Puebla:

There are students from around the world and their only common language is Spanish.

You should avoid touristic places like:

Cancun, Cabo, San Miguel de Allende, etc.

Mexico City is huge and while you can find english speaking people you can also be among millions that do not.  however it is expensive and very crowded and difficult to live.

Monterrey is the second largest city, but it is too close to the border and there are quite a few english speaking people.

You can try Veracruz, Puebla, Guadalajara, Zacatecas, Merida.  In fact Merida might not be a bad choice.  It is a capital city and while it does have some number of English speaking people it is small enough that you can avoid them.  Also when you need a break you are at three hour ride to Cancun.

    Good luck

  8. Cancun would be top for US tourists, followed by Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Ixtapa, La Paz, and a number of other places on the beach.  Mexico City is great, since there aren't many american tourists there.

  9. I would say that Guadalajara and Leon,Guanajuato are 2 different cities that don't have many U.S. or any other English speaking race. They aren't the biggest nor are they the smallest cities in Mexico, but just large enough to stay live well and learn the Spanish language. I would avoid vacation hot spots because of the fact that there are so many tourisists from around the world. Cities like Cancun. Mexico City, Acapulco, San Luis Potosi, are deffinetly places you don't want to go to learn Spanish. Good Luck! :)

  10. The more south you go the most likely you will not run into one american.
