I'm going on a honeymoon for a week in Malta in a few weeks and we want to stay in a few different cities. We want something relaxing and quaint, with lots to do and explore, and of course, beaches. We're not really into clubbing and crowds of tourists.

It'd be helpful if someone could explain what the more popular cities (St. Julians, Valetta, Millieha, Sliema) are known for, and which are worth a visit, or recommend other places to stay that are "off the beaten path".

  1. St. Julian's & Paceville are touristy but nice and relaxing at the same time. Also good for shopping and you can have lunch at really nice restaurants overlooking the sea. Go to Valletta - the city is worth a visit for its culture. Again it will be quite busy but the upper barakka is a must for the lovely view of the harbour. Mellieha is very nice although the beach is extremely packed on Sunday  - go during the week. for some peace & quiet go to Marsaxlokk village in the south of Malta - a lovely fishing village & also to the old city of Mdina in Rabat. Would also recommend a day trip to the island of Gozo and another one to Comino. Take the 20 min ferry from cirkewwa. Gozo is much quieter than Malta as a whole. Don't go to Comino on Sunday is you want peace & quiet. Weekends are always more busy than weekdays everywhere. My favourite beach in Malta is 'Paradise bay' but you definetly have to go on a weekday.    Gnejna and Golden Bay are nice too. Stay away from Paceville cos its packed with young tourists clubbing.
