Which city in Italy is best to visit with my 8 year old son?

If you only have one to choose from I'd definitely say Venice.  It's an experience like no other.  The other cities are so congested with cars and buses driving on narrow roads.  It seems too that the majority don't seem to follow traffic laws either.  I love Rome and Florence but with a young child I do believe Venice would be great.  He will be fascinated with all the gondolas, water taxis, and even police boats keeping order down the canals.  I'm sure he will enjoy.

My wife and I went to Rome, Florence and Venice.  I would say that Rome is very historical and interesting but might be a little boring for an 8-year old (and a bit fast paced).

My suggestion would probably be Florence or Venice.  Florence is very nice because you can walk everywhere and it is such a nice city.  Venice was also very exciting because you could take boats all around and still have fun walking.  

Hope that helps.. if you decide on Florence, you might stay in the Hotel Davanzati (it is family owned and a very nice place to stay).  Also, last year Hotel Davanzati had a free Sony Playstation2 in each room for watching DVDs or playing video games.  Your son might appreciate that after a long day of walking.

Rome.  I see no reason why Rome would be boring for an eight year old, and Florence or Venice would defintely be more "boring" than Rome.

Florence.  You can walk everywhere and the people are very friendly.  I would not go to Rome as a woman alone with a young child, it's a large city just like any other.

Florence, they have the best museums and outdoor art exhibits. You can take a day trip by bus into the country side and visit castles, go to Pisa, Siena, and lots of places. I think he will enjoy seeing David, The Duomo, and everything. Especially if you tell him about the history of the Deminices.

Too many museums, churches and "ancient stones".

He will have a nicer time either in Florence or Venice.

However you didn't quote how long will be yr staying and how  you are travelling. If you've time enough and if you've a car I would drive your son till Gardaland. Itsn't a town, it's the largest amusement park of Italy,not too distant from Venice or Florence, and I'm sure that after having been there yr son will bring it forever in his memory.
