Which city in Italy would you recommend?

I'm thinking about taking a short holiday at the end of this summer, and just wondering where to go. I have been to Rome and Naples recently, and Pisa and Florence when I was younger but can't remember at all.

So anyone who lives in Italy or has visited a city recently, which ones are good for a short visit? I'm thinking museums and sights. Thanks!

my favourite place in italy is verona, its just beautiful & perfect for a short stay

venice is lovely too but i find it can be over-rated. rome, i really enjoyed but we ended up spending 10 days there so unsure if this fits into a short visit or not?

also rome, end of summer is a struggle, unless u are good with the heat. its a big city & has no breeze at all.

more northern parts of italy are also nice...and ever so slightly cooler (but still hot!).

turin is very typically italian, parts of it i found too much so & some of the locals were rude to me...but thats all personal experience.

milan is an interesting place...very different from rome. its much more happening in my opinion...its also expensive. but then again so are many places in italy.

If you've been to Rome and Naples recently and are specifically looking for a city, I would recommend Florence or Venice. Both of them are compact enough to easily get around in during a short break. Both are scenic and have good museums. Florence is particularly good in this respect in addition to the Uffizi, the Accademia, Pitti Palace, and Palazzo Vecchio, there's the Bargello, the Museum of the History of Science,  the Duomo Museum, the Museum of San Marco, the Stibbart Museum, and tons of other places with interesting exhibits. I particularly like the Orsanmichele and San Mineato al Monte.

If you're there long enough, there are interesting day trips that you could take on the side from either. From Florence, there's Siena, Arezzo, the Chianti country, San Gemignano, and Pisa/Lucca to choose from. From Venice, Padova, Verona, Vicenza, and Treviso are all worth visiting.

Other possibilities that meet the criteria for museums and sights include Genova or Turin.

I have many towns to suggest to you, your choice will depend from wich part of Italy do you want to visit:

1)in Sicily (deep south): Palermo, Taormina, Catania, Siracusa, Agrigento;

2) in Apulia (south east): Lecce, Bari and Alberobello.

3)in Naples area : Sorrento, Pompeii, Caserta, Capri, Amalfi, Paestum;

4)in Tuscany(central Italy): Florence, Pisa and Siena;

5)in Venice area(north east): Venice, Padua, Verona and Garda lake

6)in Milan area(north west): Milan, Como lake, Maggiore lake.

Venice is an excellent suggestion and can easily be combined with Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet and with an amphitheatre more breath-taking (though smaller) than Rome's, the ancient stone bridges over the river, the old town (also intself a museum, to borrow a phrase ;-) and the views to the distant mountains make it a must visit in Northern Italy.

If you have time to journey further, head further west to the Lago di Garda, the biggest lake in Italy filling a mountain bordered valley.  Stunning.

Wherever you go, enjoy Italy, its people, its scenery, its food and its wine.  ;-P

hello, for a short vsit i suggets you to arrive at Pisa airport, which is very central in Tuscany. in a short holiday, depending on the number of days, i suggest you to visit again Pisa and Florence, explore the wonderful city of Lucca and you don't have to miss Volterra and San Gimignano. from Pisa and from Pisa area all these destinations are easily reachable. i suggest you to rent a car at the airport Pisa and travle around. if you don't want to take a car, you can use trains to pisa-florence-lucca and buses to volterra-san gimignano. i suggest you ti visit this website, they are specialists in Tuscany www.ariannandfriends.com. i'm sure they will help you. booking a holiday with them is amazing since you can combine art, culture, nature and good wine and food. have a look!

I've visited most of the major Italian cities, and my favourites for culture, history, sightseeing and food are:

Florence

Verona

I found Pisa had little to offer other than the leaning tower, which is overrun, and Milan is a bit anonymous. Rome and Venice are, of course, great, but very crowded. Hope this helps.
