  8. Singapore = Singa-Pura = the city of lions

It was believed that Sang Nila Utama, a Malay king was traveling on his boat somewhere near Singapore. On his little trip, a storm hit and his boat was just about to sink. At this time, his "holy man" advised him to throw away his crown. Sang Nila agreed and threw it into the sea. The storm immediately calmed and at this time, he saw an island so beautiful he told his men he wanted to take a closer look. So they landed on that island to hunt for food. Now, the king saw a doe and went chasing. What he found though is better than the doe. He saw a Lion for the first time. The lion's grandeur apparently imppressed the kings so much, he named the island Singa-Pura, the city of lions. Thus named Singapore.
