Which colleges have a very strong French dept?

I am a high school senior this year and plan to major in French. I am a very serious student and have been trying to find schools which have a strong French dept. I plan to apply to UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, Yale and Harvard. I know, however, that I should have some "safety" schools. I have also considered studying at a school in France. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Emily

  1. Other schools well known for strong language depts include Mt Holyoke, College of the Holy Cross, Bowdoin, Bates, Colby.

  2. I agree with the other respondents. All of those schools offer superior programs in languages, quite frankly, better than what you will find at the schools you mentioned in your question. One person mentioned McGill. That should be a serious choice. Another University in Quebec that offers an excellent program is Bishop's University, a small liberal arts college about 90 minutes from Montreal. The advantage is that you can receive a comparable education for a fraction of the price, especially if you are majoring in French; international students pay the same tuition rate as residents (under $4,000 for tuition and fees for 2 semesters). Check out the links below.

  3. Middlebury is generally regarded as having the strongest language department (including French, obviously) in the country.

Might also want to look at McGill, which is in Montreal and so of course has a great French program...it's also a very prestigious university overall.

Other places you could look at with strong French programs: Hamilton, Colby, Macalester, Amherst, Fairfield U, and Scripps.
