    Because at one time they were incredibly rare and expensive, and royalty were the only ones who could afford it.


  2. purple mostly because of the fact that purple tends to not be found often in nature so the average joe could not have it. It made them seem more higher up than mere peasants.

Europeans' idea of purple shifted towards this more bluish purple known as royal purple because of its similarity to the royal blue worn by the aristocracy. This was the shade of purple worn by kings in medieval Europe.
