I'm majoring in Public Policy. I wanted to minor in accounting but most of the top universities don't offer it as a minor so I narrowed my choices down to African and African American Studies and Urban Studies. I want to go to law school and start a career working with the state or federal government, so actually practicing law is not important to me. Which minor will give me a broader career choice... African and African American Studies and Urban Studies??? I value all opinions, Thanks in advance.

  1. Political Science and Accounting are the best pre-law courses.

  2. The first answer is correct: this is all irrelevant.  Your undergraduate major doesn't matter unless you want to go into IP law, which requires a science or engineering background.  Good grades, high LSAT score, and (if you're interested in public interest law) a record of work experience in the public sphere are what counts.

You shouldn't choose your major based on what you think will look good.  Choose something you're genuinely interested in and your interest is what will impress the admissions committee.

  3. Actually, if I were you I would focus on economics as a minor.  I minored in public policy, and went to a top tier law school.  Combining your major with an econ minor will get you lots of interviews, and I bet there are a lot of classes that count credits for both major and minor.

PS...I went on to get a Masters in Public Policy, before my JD, and my experience with spreadsheets and data bases, mainly perfected working in economics has greatly enhanced my career so far!

  4. Neither will help you get into law school.

Good grades... high LSAT... not getting arrested... that's where your focus should be.
