I think these terms are intertwined, and cannot be fully separated.

In order to have success, you have to have some level of confidence to drive you to be the best! Confidence allows for you to be actually invovled in the game of achieving success. Without confidence, you will wallow in pity, and have no drive to compete.

In order to have confidence, a little success is required. This may be success in the past, or the present where you feel a little more clever/experienced than your fellow competitors. Success is crucial in achieving a good level of confidence.

Therefore, I think both are needed for one another.
