They best way to build up some credit history is to get a pre-paid one.  You put an amount of money on it and then use i like a credit card or another way to start your credit rating is to apply for a catalogue and use that for purchases such as clothes etc.

My son is having the same problem and so far no luck.  There was one we found where you pay so much money and then charge something and then pay it off and even though it was a known name of credit card I asked at the bank about it and they said it was kind of like a scam almost.
