  1. Cumulus clouds. These clouds depend on temperature differences over the sea, which causes the clouds to form. After being blown over the land, where conditions can drive the cloud to greater heights (and become colder) due to higher temperatures low down, the action  causes a storm after the conditions over the land have changed.

Thunder is the sound produced by the strong discharge of high voltage electrical discharges caused by the motion of the ice particles within the cloud.  It is not due to cloud impacts when the two clouds bump their heads together. However it can also occur between two clouds having different voltages or between a cloud and a point on the earth which is at zero voltage.

  2. well, i know in the world of meteorology it has to do with atmospheric conditions.  heat rises and cold sinks, this is what causes storms. the sun heats water and it evaporates, when it gets high enough into the atmosphere it starts to cool and condense forming clouds. when the cloud gets too heavy you get rain, in the case of storms you have 2 masses of air 1 being cold and dry, and 1 being warm and moist.  when these 2 air masses collide it creates thunderstorms. this is typical in the central plains region of the united states. so i'd think its on the same concept only on a massively smaller scale
