Is there any particular order for teaching consonants?

Does the teaching method of phonics have to be different between EFL and ESL kids?

  1. when i was teaching preschool we had this sequence:

    AEIOU

    SMRF

    NGBT

    PDCK

    LJHV

    WYZ

    QX

However, it is now suggested that we teach Mm first as it is associated to a lot of basic words which the child can associate like mama, moon, mug, microphone, macaroni, map, mop, etc.

I'll update this tomorrow when i'm sure of the sequence.

***  Hi.  i couldn't find the sequence i was talking about previously. sorry.

Anyway, different schools adopt a different pattern or sequence in teaching phonics for a reason.  Ours adopted it because  there were a lot of words associated to such letters which the child can identify and easily memorize.

  2. There are a few suggested sequences.  Is this American? as I don't want to give the Scottish one if it doesn't even apply.

If this is for your own child, I would start with the first letter of their name.

  3. With young children, I ALWAYS focus individually on the first letter of their name, because that letter has personal meaning to them.  In addition, I teach as a group beginning with the easiest letters to write.  Usually Tt, Ll, Ii, and so on.  Easy vertical and horizontal strokes are usually the first ones children can understand and make, and if you teach them to write the letters at the same time, they will have a better understanding of what that symbol means.

  4. I think it is best to start with A and move on to the other letters. Of course you should always go back and review each letter.

  5. either the first letter in there name or start with the alphabet. hmm they have to learn it sooner than later and the alphabet has all the letters, i  hope your not teaching because if you are what type of school did you go to?

  6. I prefer to start with the most used consonants: RSTLN but there are a great many methods that are successful.

If you want a great program for kids, check out Jolly Phonics.

Using children's names to teach the letters helps too.

  7. We teach the alphabet in order in preschool - kindergarten teaches them mixed up - perhaps in sequence, not really sure.

  8. ugh warent we talking about eeelemeentrrry.

  9. i'm not a teacher (i'm a high school sophmore) i say you teach the letters in aphabetical order, or do vowels then B-Z consonants in aphabetical order

for learning cursive/script there are activity books, but that is a completely different story.

  10. Good God; where do these people get their answers? If you are talking about how sounds are acquired during speech development, here's your answer:

Teaching speech sounds follows the developmental sequence of phonological development, NOT the order of the alphabet. This is true for every verbal human on the planet, even ESL and EFL students..

                                                                                                                                                                                                          All vowels, including dipthongs

    m, b, p, g, k, t, d, w, f, v, l, yuh, s, ch, sh, voiced th, unvoiced th, dg, vocalic r, and consonantal r.
