Which copy of my DD214 do I show an employer?

  1. I used the one that stated the full conditions of my discharge.  (Honorable - retired).

    BTW - current advice from the military is not to file your DD-214 at the courthouse.  Doing this makes the document a public record that identity thieves can use.


  2. I had to show 4 to my employer but that was because it is a technichian job on a army base. I don't think it would matter for a civilian employer because they just need proof and that copy 1 will do just that purpose. Keep 4 in a fire safe box though.

  3. Usually they want the copy that contains the type of your discharge.  

    Also, just to be safe, take the long copy to the County Court House and have a copy of it registered there.  That way if you loose the original, you can get a certified copy any time.  It is cheaper and a lot faster than getting the military to send a new one to you.
