Neither one particularly gives a ... but the US is our largest trading partner (as we are theirs), so they are more involved whether they know it or not.  many US universities have Canadian Studies courses, and Canadian academics and entertainers have a large influence on their thinking.

Connections with Britain are largely of historical note only.

Undoubtedly, it is Britain because Canada is a Commonwealth country.  Besides, the USA has no interest in any country but itself, they probably couldn't find Canada on a map.
