  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy#Mo...

See the above linked page. Apparently there are 45 monarchies in the world at a national level, not including subnational or tribal territories. Of the 45, 16 have Elizabeth II as queen.

  2. this is a bit more complicated than the first answerer suggests.  Those which have monarchy as a form of government, ie they have direct monarchial rule (the king or queen makes the laws), is far fewer.  These countries are said to have absolute monarchs.  The list of countries that fall under this category include:

Saudi Arabia; Lichenstein; Tonga; Oman; Bahrain; Brunei

The countries that have a government that is not selected by the monarch (usually by the people in elections) but still retain the monarch as head of state include:

United Kingdom; Canada; Australia; New Zealand; Jamaica; Belize; Bahamas; Antigua and Barbuda; Grenada; Papua New Guinea; Samoa; The Netherlands; Belgium; Spain; Denmark; Norway; Sweden; Morocco; Jordan; Thailand; Japan; Solomon Islands; Lesotho, plus many others.
