Sugar comes from sugarcane, which is perennial grass that grows in tropical or temperate climates around the world. It is a two-step process to turn sugarcane into refined white sugar. The first process usually takes placewhere the sugarcane grows, and a mechanical harvester collects the crops. The machines in the sugar mills break down the sugar cane into sugar crystals. Refineries take the sugar crystals and turn them into granulated sugar.
It is a worldwide commodity and the following countries produce sugar: Brazil, India, China, Thailand, the United States and Mexico.
