I'm Macedonian from Macedonia, but I'm interested if the people know my country, not just people from Balkans countries, but from the whole world? Have you heard about Macedonia and what do you know about it?

  1. Well, I'm Croatian, of course I heard for it, my grandfather was Macedonian, and when someone says Macedonia I think of the country (FYROM) not the Greek province and so does the rest of Croatia.

  2. I now stay in Denmark, I am orginally from Gevgelia in MAcedonia (fyrom). i must be honest and say that, i do not consider myself ethnic macedonian, because the ethnic macedonians are of hellenic decent. And i am of slavic. People here tend to think of Macedonia as Greece, and know of an "issue" of the name between us and Greece. But whateva people think about "macedonia" they believ that Alexander The Great, was/is greek. And there i do have to agree with them. i studied some history at college.

HOpe we can sort this out soon, my country, FYROM, needs good relations with greece, they could be a very important ally/partner. i wouldnt mind giving up, the name macedonia, for the greater good of our future. im a realist thats all. We are still a young and poor country, we cant afford to be choosers at this moment.

  3. Macedonia is one and only. Divided since 1913 between Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece.

Only the Serbian "gift succeeded independence and freedom- to days Republic of Macedonia.

The occupied part under Greece is under strong assimilation politics, Macedonian minority is without any civil minority right.

Macedonians under Bulgaria still fight for heir civil minority rights (find "OMO Ilinden" "Pirin" etc).

  4. I am Greek and I know that there is only one state under that name - the Republic of Macedonia.

The territory of Makedonia is a district in Greece, but not a country.

  5. What kind of a name is Macedonia. Where does it come from?

  6. I thought Macedonia was the largest region of Greece? Balkan wars, Alexander the Great, Philip, Macedon... no?

I never knew Macedonia was its own country..

  7. There is only one country with that name and that is The Republic of Macedonia, of course.

I am Turkish and all my fellow countrymen recognize the country under its constitutional name which is Republic of Macedonia.

I know that it's a beautiful country with a unique and colorful culture, history and cuisine. I also know that people are very friendly.

  8. I don't know a country with that name

School teached us that is a region ,not a country.

  9. Of course, only one country, my country, Republic of Macedonia. I don't think this question is provocative, why would it be? You Greeks can't make our country disappear, no matter how hard you try.

  10. Hello "plostad" long time no see!

Only one country I recognize under Macedonia, and that's my beloved homeland - Republic of Macedonia!

And comen guys let's stop with that "greek question"! Don't you think it's getting boring:)

    Greetings from Macedonia!

  11. As far as I know Macedonia (Makedonija) with capital at 'Skopje' (Uskub), was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia (1946-1991). The others are Croatia (Zagreb), Slovenia (Ljubljana), Serbia (Belgrade), Bosnia-Herzegovina (Sarajevo) & Montenegro (Podgorica). After becoming independent 'Greece' which ahs a larger Macedonian province objected a neighbouring country called by the same name. This resulted in The country named as FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). Area:25,433sq.km.; Population: more than 2 million (1999).

  12. Of course, I know everything about it, but then again, I am from ex-Yugoslavia.

  13. I only know that there is a part of Greece with the name Macedonia and a country with the name Macedonia but the country usually has the name (FYR) Macedonia.

I also know about the problems between Greece and (FYR) Macedonia, so i think that you asked this question only to provoke.

Excuse me but you are reported, i am exhausted from this kind of questions in Y!Answers.

  14. I think you are sincere in your inquiry, and I would never have seen it, if not for my contact, Zoltan, so I thank him for the star.   Now, as to your question, what I thought about your homeland, is not what I think now.   I knew the general location, but not much more than that I'm afraid. Once I started to read the answers you received, it made me quite interested to learn more about it.  (I smelled the sarcasm all the way over in Florida!)....Ok, so I go to wikipedia, and this is what I read:

The definition of Macedonia is a major source of confusion and debate due to the overlapping use of the term to describe geographical, political and historical areas, languages and peoples. Ethnic groups inhabiting the area use different terminology for the same entity, or the same terminology for different entities, which is often confusing to other inhabitants of the region and foreigners alike.

Historically, the region has presented markedly shifting borders across the Balkan peninsula. Geographically, no single definition of its borders or the names of its subdivisions is accepted by all scholars and ethnic groups. Demographically, it is mainly inhabited by four ethnic groups, three of which self-identify as Macedonians: two, a Bulgarian and a Greek one at a regional level, while a third ethnic Macedonian one at a national level. Linguistically, the names and origins of the languages and dialects spoken in the region are a source of controversy. Politically, the rights to the extent of the use of the name Macedonia and its derivatives has led to a diplomatic dispute between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. Despite mediation of the United Nations, the dispute is still pending resolution.

After reading that, I continued to read more.  I did know it was a landlocked country, but I didn't know that it was so ethnicly

diverse.  The fantastic amount of culture, beautiful people, and breath taking landscapes, (I viewed some really amazing photos), are reason enough to want to visit your country.  Although I see no reason to be hateful to each other, it happens everywhere, and that's too bad.  The wonderful thing about human beings, is that we can embrace the differences in others, and we can accept/respect their beliefs and want them in return to respect ours, yet we choose not to, and that's too bad.  Makes no sense to me, because I'd like to experience all of it. I am interested in knowing how and what you feel about your country joining the EU.  Also, what is the proper name of Macedonia?  I've seen it called, Republic of Macedonia, and FYROM, so, what do you say, and is it insulting the use the abbreviation?  I always say Macedonia, but something tells me that isn't correct. Please advise.

I've gone on entirely too long, so I will leave you a quote that I truly believe everyone should read everyday until they believe it. Thank you for your time, and thank you for the great question, as I learned many things from it, and I love that.   Peace, Jen

  15. There is only one country, the Republic of Macedonia. The region n Greece that it's called Macedonia was annexed by Greece after Balkan Wars. Back then, it was populated mostly by Macedonian and Jews. That just shows how much Macedonia was Greek. But they solved this problem with the exodus over Macedonians in 1948
