  1. In early Rome or Greece (I can't remember which) a shepherd named Magnes was standing on a rocky outcrop when he noticed the iron bottom of his crook was attracted to the rocks. The rocks were named magnetite after him and magnets were named after that.

  4. Either the Chinese or the Vikings first discovered magetite and used it to find north/south.
