Clarification. Based on your overall opinion of a given opera. If you think most of the best operas come from France, and the worst from Japan, then you would say as much. If you don't think such a generalization can be made, then you can answer with that caveat.

  1. If you mean the country of origin, then it's Italy.. but if you mean where it is PERFORMED the best then my vote would be for either Austria or Belgium.  There is a lot to be said about any country that has a KING or a QUEEN and provides low priced tickets to the ROYAL OPERA HOUSE for the various productions.  There is also an emphasis on the theater in countries with Royalty that you don't find in other countries.

The bottom of the sewage pit for opera productions is AmeriKa... it's pathetic... for one thing... they make that stupid translation from an Italian libretto to an AmeriKan libretto... and that always loses something in translation...

  2. Best productions of opera?

    Best operas composed?

I'm sorry, but the question doesn't make any sense.  Could you clarify?

More clarification needed: I'm sorry, but that still is kind of vague.  Are you talking about the music itself, or the performance of it?

  3. Best-Italy

    Worst-America

  4. I am a bit confuse about your question but If you mean to ask which country have the most successful opera composers then I can tell you that Grand Opera Houses always have a large repertoire of Italian and French composer's operas.

It is not a matter of which is best or worst since you ask 100 opera goers and you will get 100 different answers.

I myself have favorites in Italian (La Boheme) French (Faust)

German (Die Fledermaus) Russian (Boris Godunov) and others in English (not specific favorite).

There are some operas that I will not attend (but I am well familiar with the music) primarily because they are extremely

long to perform - like some of German operas by Wagner.

That does not mean that they are "bad" operas just that I do not wish to sit for 4 hours at a time.

Opera is a fusion between dramatic or romantic drama and

music and is one of the great pleasures of life if one learns

    to understand it.

Thank you for asking the question. I hope this answer help.

  5. country vs country?

I'd say the charge of the light brigade, or when the last of the calvary meets the first of the panzer tanks would make a pretty good stage play.
