Most common way to compare is by GDP per capita at PPP, which puts Luxembourg, Norway, Singapore at the top, US at around #4 to #6 depending on whose calculations you look at.

Another way is to look at the country as a whole, which has US as the largest economy, China second (and growing faster).

But I prefer the UN human development index, which includes things like education, health, and gender equility, as well as GDP in the calculation. This list is headed by Iceland, Norway and Australia, with US at 12 and Japan at number 8.
