  1. It is claimed by Britain, though this claim is ambiguous. Britain effectively relinquished it in 1982 under a UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which asked nations not to claim uninhabited rocky outposts which cannot support human life, which lie more than a prescribed distance from the mainland.

    A 1999 Scottish law, which defines the boundaries of Scottish waters, once again claimed it, as it fell within the distance of its waters.
